What is an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check in a free check-up for adults in England aged 40-74 who don’t already have certain health conditions. The check looks at your circulatory and vascular health and helps you understand your risk of developing disabling diseases.

What happens at your Health Check

Your appointment takes about 20-30 minutes. Here is what to expect:

  • Simple questions about you and your health, family history, and any medication you take
  • Measurements of your height, weight and waist
  • Blood pressure check
  • Quick blood test for cholesterol and sugar levels (results in about 5 minutes)
  • Personal risk calculation for cardiovascular disease
  • Tailored lifestyle advice to help you stay healthy
  • Results sent to your GP if you are seen by our Outreach Team or a pharmacist

How to get your free NHS Health Check

If you are eligible, you will usually receive a text or letter from your GP inviting you for a free NHS Health Check

If you haven’t received an invitation, but you are interested and think you are eligible, you can:

  • Ask your GP: Contact your GP practice to check your eligibility and request an NHS Health Check.
  • Book with our outreach team: You can also book an appointment directly with our outreach team by checking available locations near you through our Health Check locations page.
